In 1978 a new seed came alive in me when I surrendered to Jesus Christ. I became a new person, I didn’t look like a new person, but I felt like a new person, and in many ways acted like a new person. I hadn’t learnt any new information or facts about God. As only God can he enabled me to see that I already knew truth, and because it was true is was real and personal.
I realised I can be aware of many facts about the truth of God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, and the Bible; facts that only become true in me as I surrender and experience them.
Revelation 3:1-7 is a letter from Jesus to the church in Ephesus written around AD95. You can read it for yourself, I want to share verses 4 & 5.
I hold this against you: you have forsaken your first love. Remember the height from which you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first.
Christianity is not knowing that God is love, it is letting God love us and reciprocating that love. Since God’s love is full of mercies there’s many benefits in letting God love us. And all it requires is my remembering that I am loved by God, and doing the things I did at first. And at first I freely fell in love with Jesus Christ as I saw he first loved me.
The truth is a reciprocal relationship of love. Just a few days ago I wrote this in my journal: Holy Spirit you are saying I am not doing business with you, creating an agreement, responding to terms you have laid down. I am becoming ONE with you; because I was born of an imperishable seed (1 Peter 1:23) when I surrendered myself to Jesus Christ.
Here is the point.
The Holy Spirit who breathed into dust and formed Adam as living being in the image of God, breathed into Mary and formed Jesus as living being. The egg came from Mary and the seed from the Holy Spirit. The same seed from the Holy Spirit who conceived Jesus conceives in every believer new life in Christ. Pause now and remember when you first believed in Jesus.
Remember how the Holy Spirit entered into your body and soul bringing the true you to life for the first time. The ‘you’ God saw before anything was created. The ‘you’ who is uniquely shaped with intelligence, creativity, love and grace to fit in and add value just by being yourself. This new you is of the same seed as Jesus Christ. This seed is a seed of the love of God. I am born of the love of God, and grow in that love as I reciprocate love from the seed I am born of, this is a mystery and truth.
So then if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. 2 Corinthians 5:17
Religion continually pulls us to see from the outside. To study Jesus, describe his character, list his teachings, and to try and be like him and follow his teaching. The Bible calls us to believe that the same seed that brought Christ to life on earth in the flesh, brings us to life on earth in our flesh. The same Holy Spirit that breathed into Mary and conceived Christ, breathes into us and conceives a new creation in the likeness of Christ. I supply the uniqueness of my earthly self. The Holy Spirit supplies the miracle of the seed of Jesus Christ. The imperishable seed.
Do you remember?
Can you testify to being born of this seed? Do you know what it is to come alive with love for God? If you’ve lost this, remember what you did when you first had it, and do it again. Remember how you entrusted yourself to God, how you just believed and received, and return to that place. In this place ask Jesus to wash you clean from religion and renew his Spirit within you, and to restore to you the joy of being saved, of having a new life in him.
Now I grow up in who I am. I don’t grow past being a child, but I do mature as child of God. My obedience is obeying the seed of new life in me. My faith is being true to who I am as a born from above son of God. Jesus put it like this in John 15:4 “Remain in me, and I will remain in you.”
“Remain in me, and I will remain in you.”
There are some verses in the Bible that we can’t read to many times. I encourage you to read John 15:1-8. See yourself as one with Christ, and see these verses as a context in which your new life will grow. Read them with the Holy Spirit as your teacher, and let the truth in them become true in you. We can’t make it happen by effort, but we can let it happen by diligently remaining in love with Jesus.
